Kindergarten in Utah

Kindergarten is not mandatory in Utah. However, all school districts must offer at least a half-day program for their students. In 2023, the Utah Legislature passed HB477, allowing families to access optional full-day kindergarten. To enroll, a child must turn five before September 2 of that school year.

Open Enrollment in Utah

Utah is one of the few states with unrestricted open enrollment for public schools, meaning you can send your child to any public school in the state, regardless of where you live. If you're interested in open enrollment in a particular school, it's important to contact the school or school district directly to learn about specific dates and requirements. Open enrollment periods are limited and usually start in November. If you plan to apply to a school outside your local school boundary enrolling early gives your child the best chance of being accepted.

Before and After School Care

Afterschool programs provide safe and enriching learning environments for children and youth outside regular school hours. Many schools in Utah offer on-site afterschool programs, while some afterschool programs provide transportation to and from nearby schools. These programs are often hosted at childcare centers, home-based providers, or community centers. Programs fill up quickly, so we recommend securing a spot before the school year starts.
