Transition to Kindergarten
Starting kindergarten is a big change for both children and families. It involves excitement, some nerves, and a need to navigate new routines. Being prepared for kindergarten is more than knowing how to count and being able to sing the alphabet. For your child, it is knowing how to stand in a line, sharing, and taking turns. For you, it’s navigating a new school system, schedule, and the school calendar.
Here are some ways to ease the transition:

Children may feel nervous about new routines and people. Reassure them by:
- Talking about what to expect.
- Visiting the school beforehand.
- Acknowledging their feelings and offering comfort.

Support early literacy and math:

- Read together daily.
- Play counting or sorting games.
- Encourage curiosity and creative play.

Foster self-reliance by:

- Practicing self-help skills (e.g., dressing, eating, using the bathroom independently).
- Establishing consistent routines.
- Giving small responsibilities, like picking up toys, and helping empty the dishwasher.

Support social and emotional skills by:

- Providing opportunities to explore, play, and socialize.
- Role-playing social situations (e.g., sharing, joining a group).
- Teaching kindness, respect, and patience.

Communication with teachers is essential:

- Attend orientations and parent-teacher meetings.
- Share any concerns or special needs.
- Partner with teachers to support your child’s growth.

Help your child feel excited by:

- Emphasizing the fun of kindergarten.
- Reassuring them that it’s normal to feel nervous.
- Celebrating small milestones

Your child must be five years old before September 2 of the enrolling year.
You may be asked to provide a birth certificate, proof of address, and immunization record or exemption.
Check with school districts and charter schools for additional requirements.
